DEII had the pleasure of collaborating with the brilliant Maria Franzoni recently, and together, we decided to create a series of concise Zoom interviews discussing key future trends.

In our twelfth friendly chat, we dive into a fresh perspective on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Have you ever pondered the future of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)? It’s a topic that I think is completely misunderstood. If we drift back 50-60 years, we see perfection in the diverse cast of “Star Trek,” a crew exploring the universe without the need to spotlight their diversity – a pure embodiment of DEI without ever uttering its name. That was the genius of Gene Roddenberry!

But in our present era, it feels like we’re weathering a storm of complex terminologies and labels, causing more division than unity. Perhaps it’s an unfortunate, but necessary stage of evolution, a stepping stone to reach the harmony depicted in Roddenberry’s vision. It’s like being in the throes of VUCA, facing rapid changes and adapting to survive. Yet, industry data tells us that diversity enhances profitability and innovation, a critical aspect often overlooked as shown by the haptic suit example in this video. In essence, DEI is vital, but I hope we adjust our lens to see the true direction of progress. I hope Piers Thurston will provide a truly forward-thinking perspective in the comments too!

There are more insights about DEI in my second book ‘Future Hackers.

These bite-sized conversations, lasting no more than two minutes, will be released every Tuesday and Thursday. I hope you enjoy them!
